read a book: heaven is here

January 20, 2013

I finished reading Heaven is Here today. It's probably pretty obvious that I loved it.

The author so perfectly describes her happy life leading up to her accident. She writes about her lifelong desire to be a wife and mother and how becoming those things brought her more fulfillment than anything else could. She tells about the accident, the physical and emotional trials that followed, how difficult it was to learn to love herself again as well as win back the love of her children. She shares her gratitude for the heavenly help she received, in addition to the help from her family, friends, and strangers.

I loved this book because the story shows real faith. The kind of faith that isn't only saying you believe but also putting your faith into action - working hard, trusting the Lord, letting yourself become vulnerable, and seeing miracles.

This book strengthened my desire to be a mom someday. It showed me what real patience means. It helped me add to the important list of things to look for in a husband. This book is real and eye-opening and such a blessing to read.

I'm all about quotes and I'm all about marking up books when they're my own, so here are a few things I underlined in Heaven is Here.

"A bit of patience, trust, and perspective would have served me well, but I was carried on the wave of every emotion that washed over me." (Talking [directly to my soul] about dating in Provo..)

"I realized that the only way I was going to learn to do things again was to actually do them. I needed to have the courage to try and to work hard. I had to be willing to fail and then try again. And keep trying and failing until I got strong enough to succeed."

"I still have to remind myself to choose happiness almost every morning when I wake up in pain, and I expect I will need reminding throughout my life, but the amazing thing is the more I make the choice to see and feel joy, the more joy there is to see and to feel."

[I loved all the wonderful things the author had to say about Provo, too. I've been missing that place, and I'm excited that I'll be back in the Spring.]

I loved that book! Basically I love Nie Nie and I stalk her blog and instagram all the time. I need to re-read that book since I read it almost a year ago when it first came out.
