"they say if you dream a thing more than once it's sure to come true."

May 22, 2013

But also sometimes dreams that you never even knew you had come true. And let me tell you, that's alright too.

Last semester during my College Program at Walt Disney World I was lucky enough and seriously honored to "work with" Princess Aurora. We became the best of friends, and before I forget all of those magical moments we experienced together I decided I need to post them on the internet where they can live forever.

Working with the princess kept me on my toes the entire time, every time - seriously I couldn't think about anything else for a single second during work. I had to study her entire life and commit every detail to memory. And lest anyone thinks Aurora's life began and ended with her movie, Sleeping Beauty, it definitely did not. This girl is a living, breathing princess and has new adventures every day. Guests at Disney World ask about her friends, her prince, her sleeping schedule.. Aurora always has an answer to every question, not to mention a new story for every star-struck child who can only stand in awe and listen.

My first two days working with Aurora were seriously terrifying. Talk about pushing me outside my comfort zone. I struggled at times and only hope I didn't ruin the image of Princess Aurora for any guests. I still remember my two fav-or-ite moments from the very first day.

First favorite: I was with Aurora meeting guests in Epcot. This precious little boy - maybe three years old - in a light blue shirt that matched his seriously gorgeous eyes came to meet Aurora. He was awfully shy so she knelt down to his level to tell him how handsome he looked and that she guessed he must have been very brave just like Prince Phillip. I know personally I didn't expect too many little boys to be interested in Aurora's stories, but this boy hung on every word. Aurora kept talking and talking, looking right into those little blue eyes. After a while they both turned to pose for a picture, and the boy's parents suggested his older sister jump in for the picture, too. No way was that okay with this boy. He wanted a picture all by himself with the princess. aaand, that's when my little Disney princess heart melted for the first time.

Second favorite: Boys again! These two boys were older - maybe seven. And they were gentlemen. They were so polite and respectful and chivalrous and I'm running out of synonyms, but they knew how they were going to act in front of royalty. I swear they both were down on one knee the whole time doing that outstretched-arm-into-a-bow thing. Seriously, so hilarious and charming.

The first guest I already knew who came to meet Aurora while I was working with her was another character performer from my training group. And if Christopher ever reads this I hope he knows how much that meant to me! Aurora had so much fun talking and joking with him and his best friend. Then Miss Madison came, too! She was the absolute sweetest, and I'm so glad I got to know her while I was in Florida.

It was interesting to work with Aurora and identify what I didn't realize before was a very unique Sleeping Beauty fan base. As in, a lot of young kids love the princesses from newer movies most - Rapunzel, Merida, and even though she isn't new, Cinderella. (It was Florida, that's her castle.. I get it.) Most of Aurora's biggest fans were the moms and grandmas who grew up with her movie. So often the kids would take a picture with Aurora because that's what they've been taught to do.. and then the mom or grandma would step up - shy, excited, we saw them all - and have a picture with just her and the princess.

Plenty of little girls do love Aurora, though. I loved seeing girls in their little pink Sleeping Beauty dresses. Aurora would sometimes ask if their three good fairies had made those beautiful dresses. Well, her three good fairies made her dress! For her sixteenth birthday. So many of them were typical little smarty-pants. "No, my mom bought it for me." But the younger, more shy ones usually bugged out their eyes and nodded. Sometimes Aurora would ask those girls if they had seen her fairies anywhere in the park that day. She's been looking for them everywhere! They're always up to something with their magic wands, those fairies.. Maybe if that little girl sees them flying outside she could let them know Aurora has been looking for them? Cue more bugged eyes and vigorous nods.

I loved hearing girls prove their knowledge of Aurora's life - naming all the fairies and which color they each wear and what happened to make Aurora fall asleep and who made it happen and who saved her.. I loved hearing Aurora ask a girl if that boy with her was her dream prince, only to get the consistent giggle or roll of the eyes and, "Noo, that's my brother!"

Oh, brothers. Those three sweet boys on my first day with Aurora really did turn out to be some of the few and the proud boys showing any interest in princesses. Especially those ten to sixteen year old punks.. No tiniest desire for a single picture. or half-second of eye contact even. Not a problem though, Aurora has some tricks. Any of the younger shy boys who came close enough for a picture would get to hear a secret from Aurora. As they leaned in even closer to hear the secret they got a big kiss on the cheek instead. Red cheeks and sneaking smiles for daysss. Those older pre-teen to teenage boys usually just had a few kisses blown their way. Aurora is married, after all.

I think that's it for tonight, little blog. Though I have a feeling this isn't the last Aurora post we'll see.

My first favorite princess. I wanted her peasant dress, though. I was not into the froo froo frilly pink stuff. But I memorize every line from the movie. And I would sing her song to my babies all the time. Very special indeed.

Oh my goodness your friend Aurora is STUNNING! I must say I am a much bigger fan of her new look, the dress is more flattering. Do you agree? I miss you so much and I am so sad I never got the chance to visit Aurora when you were spending time with her. I hope you are doing well!
