best friends forever, for real.

December 15, 2013

On Friday afternoon - the day after Thanksgiving - Stefan and I went to visit his friend, Stella. Stella is the kindest, funniest lady - just how I've been hearing her described the past few months. I'm not sure how many years it will take until I love Stefan as much as Stella does. Luckily, I think she approved of me.

After visiting with Stella we headed back to Stefan's parents' house so I could meet his Grandpa John (doesn't everyone need a Grandpa John? I know I do.) and his wife Marion. I got to hear lots of stories about Grandpa John's farm and answer lots of their questions about me and now I've officially met all of Stefan's immediate family, grandparents, and lots of aunts, uncles, cousins, mission family.. this kid is popular, I'm serious.

That night we celebrated Stefan's and my birthday and I never know how to phrase sentences like that but we ate at ..Wildfire? something fire, and it was good. Stefan's sweet sister, Dani, even had gifts for us at dinner! Plus his mom had more later that night! Talk about a welcoming family, and I mean it.

Earlier that day Stefan's niece Claire had told me she already knew Frozen was going to be her favorite movie, even though we weren't going to see it until after dinner.. cutie. But Frozen was so good, I even liked it more than I expected which is always nice.

We ended our busy day back at home where Stefan was finally going to let me look through his baby/childhood pictures after days of me begging, him promising, and me reminding him to let me! So we all kind of snuggled up in one room of the house and I became completely absorbed in his precious little childhood history - so much that when he flipped to the next picture and instead of his white-blond head of hair there was a picture of a diamond ring staring up at me.. safe to say I was surprised. Well played, Stef.

I guess he was waiting for me to say something so finally I asked,
"Is this from your childhood, too?"
"No, this one is from right now."
Where are the wide-eyed emoji on this computer keyboard when you need 'em!?
Language skills are dead, I suppose. Or.. mine, at least.
Well then he stood me up off the couch, dropped down to one knee, said the cutest words to ever grace my ears about us and love and I didn't even cry but I think I can honestly say I've never been happier. Oh, and I said yes. Surprise, everyone! I'm in love.

More proof of my lacking language skills.. I was on the phone with Molly probably ten minutes later and when she asked about the ring I told her, "I love it! It has a curvy band with one simple diamond, and it's kinda small.. but that's okay."

. . . long pause.

"I mean the band is a little small, not the diamond!"
"Okay, good because I was going to say - Erin! You can't just say that out loud.."

The band, guys. The band was tight. The diamond is perfect. And now the band is fixed so everything about it is perfect!

Also, I apologize for posting a black and white picture with an apparently vague caption. I had red-eye in the picture with no way to fix it on my phone, so I went black and white. As for the caption, I thought it was clever. And true. And if you know me at all, you can't tell me you didn't see it coming. (Most likely I had already told you because sometimes secrets are hard.) But I guess more people than I realized didn't quite get it at first so next time I'll make it more clear.

. . . . .

So far everything I had heard about being engaged has proven to be completely true. It's a lot of fun, a little hard, really exciting, and already lasting too long. I've already had a couple minor break downs where I feel overwhelmingly.. overwhelmed. But whether on my own, with Stefan's help, a couple prayers, a phone call with my mom or sisters.. I'm always able to take two steps back and remember that in the end I'm marrying my best friend and who cares about anything else.

. . . . .

PS - when I say "best friends forever, for real" here's what I mean.

Erin....now what will your last name be again? Vandergraff or something...hahaha! LOVE LOVE LOVE it! So...when are you going to call and let me know ALL the nitty gritty details? I gotta hear it from your own happy voice - tho a text and a blog post work too.

And are you coming home for Christmas AT ALL!? When will I see you or meet that man, Stefan! I'll be patient, but not for long!

Congrats, my friend! I am overjoyed for you!!!!
