portland foodie report: not quite fast food

June 06, 2014

Sometimes you just want a burger or some pizza, okay? Actually Hot Lips was the very first place Stefan and I ever went or ate in Portland. Right after we moved all of our stuff up to our apartment we were starving, and our building manager told us there was a good pizza place a couple blocks away. There are a few Hot Lips around Portland but this one is literally one hundred steps away from the Timbers soccer stadium. There was a game that night and luckily we got there just before the rush.

Side note: Timbers fans are loud. And living two blocks from the stadium, we hear it all. That first night, Stefan would always check the score right after the stadium got really loud. Sometimes the Timbers had scored, but then sometimes when we checked the score hadn't changed. I truly think they scream about everything. A friend told us that Landon Donovan once said a game in this stadium is the closest thing to a European soccer experience that America has. I don't know, I've never experienced either, but hopefully we'll get to a Timbers game soon!

Stefan went for classic pepperoni and I tried this crazy pizza covered in locally grown things you normally don't find on pizza. Broccoli, nuts, I think squash or maybe it was a squash sauce.. It was really tasty, but wouldn't satisfy if you're craving pizza. Also the breadsticks. Huge, delicious, really huge, we'll split one next time.

My husband loves Yelp a lot, so that's how we found this next place. Brunch Box makes really good burgers and really good fries. They also have a build-your-own-burger option, which is what I did because hello, I know what I like when it comes to burgers. Those fries though! We got the Brew House Fries: covered in garlic with parmesan cheese, green onions, and malt vinegar. Those were, though slightly difficult and very messy to eat, the highlight.

I don't know if I'm allowed to post these, but I'll ask for forgiveness later if needed. I think they're funny! Right as we left for dinner, we realized Stefan's bike had been stolen. (It's our own fault, really. It had brand new tires and a brand new seat and we locked it up outside our apartment with a lock we should have known wasn't good enough. We've learned our lesson and we'll get him another one soon!) So when I told him I wanted to take a picture of him he said, "Okay, let me try to look happy and sad at the same time." Nailed it.

Someday I want to eat one of those burgers and go to a Timbers game! Sorry about the bike. :(

Bummer about the bike but good food can cure many ills. I'll keep my eyes out of a vintage replacement bike.
