RUNNING bLOG: getting started

I decided I want to start posting about running things on here. Posting about running is sure to motivate me to run more, right? And doesn't everyone say you're supposed to tell other people about your goals? Who knows, maybe some people will want to read about it. Maybe I can tell funny stories or offer good tips or get someone else interested in all this too. If nothing else, my dad will probably like it!

Today I want to talk about running, but also just being active in general. A few days ago I was talking with my mom on the phone, and she told me she had just bought a treadmill! Go my mom, right? She has never loved running, but she does love to walk. She decided she wanted a treadmill not so she can train to run one million ultra-marathons, but so she can walk while she watches tv and keep her loving little heart healthy. So yes, go my mom! 

And I think that is totally the right mindset. You don't have to run marathons to be a runner, you don't have to run to be healthy, honestly you don't have to do any of these things at all if you don't want to, but for the sake of this post.. Do what's best for you. Do what you want and what makes you feel good. All I know is that running makes me feel good, every time. I don't know, it's science.

Over the weekend I saw this girl out "running" and honestly at first glance I thought she must have been in a lot of pain by the way she was going so, so slowly and just.. running.. really strangely. And then I watched her for another second, and I totally changed my mindset. Because, good for her! She was out there and she was doing it and I know she is going to be happy she did.

I think a lot of people can't get excited about running or exercising because they think there are too many expectations. But if you do have the desire to get out and walk or run or ride your bike or anything, don't let other people or anything else stop you. Don't think you have to run at a certain speed or go a certain distance to make it count. Don't be embarrassed if you need to stop and catch your breath. Don't worry if someone passes you. Don't let skinny girls at the gym make you feel bad, and if you are lucky enough or have worked hard enough to be a skinny girl, please don't make other people feel inferior.

Be proud of yourself for whatever it is you are able to accomplish. And the next time you need a running buddy or a pep talk, you can call me.

Now for a true, somewhat traumatizing story from a run over the weekend: About two minutes into my run on Friday I was passing an entrance to a parking lot. A nice man in his truck was kindly waiting for me to pass him before he pulled out of the parking lot onto the street. As I ran past his truck, I could hear something noisy through my headphones and thought the man must have had his music turned up really loudly. But then I realized the truck was on my right and the noise was definitely behind me. I turned to look over my left shoulder and suddenly a herd of girls in navy spandex shorts was all but trampling me face-first onto the sidewalk. It was so terrifying. They came up fast and there was roughly one million of them them. Luckily I was able to jump out of the way before they were able to run me over without batting an eye.. I figured their matching shorts meant they are part of some BYU team, but I couldn't figure out which. Well whichever one it is, they better win their next game or else obviously they should have been back on the court/field practicing instead of endangering innocent, slower girls.

If nothing else, your dad will definitely love it! I agree; 1. I run because it makes me feel good. All the other benefits are extra. 2. The running community is very accepting. It doesn't matter if you're Olympic marathoner or an endurance jogger, like me, all are welcomed. 3. I too have almost been trampled but by the EIU cross country team and it is intimidating. But, like you wrote, it doesn't matter because I'm was out there doing something which is always better than doing nothing.
